A few words on the 'process'.
Most of the designs are created using Rhino, a CAD program which I highly
recommend. Very intuitive and fun. Once the design is good, the CAD file is sent
off to a company that does what's called 'rapid prototyping' or sometimes, '3-D printing'.
3-D printing is a process involving some dazzling machines (there are actually many technologies that do this)
which ultimately crank out the model in a waxy, corn-starchy material. This waxy, corn-starchy model is then
sent off to a conventional foundry.
The foundry casts the model in metal using 'lost-wax' or 'investment casting'.
And I do the final finishing and buffing with a Dremel. I have been quite inspired by the
elegant and technical work of Bathsheba Grossman
who has taught me much on the subject.
